Central City East Students Design New
Toy District Banners
|
ooJust in time for the holiday shopping season, 30 new banners were added to the Toy District.
Students from the Central City East area submitted paintings and drawings of toys to be included on a single Toy District banner design. Each student submitting artwork received a medal of accomplishment.
ooA four-member panel which included Mrs. Jose Huizar, LAPD Senior Lead Officer Deon Joseph and Council District 9 Deputy of Arts and Education, Pamela Huntoon who chose the final artwork included on the banner. Project Manager Qathyrn Brehm then completed a design layout with the chosen artwork.
ooThe completed 3’ x 8’ banners were installed on Wall, Winston and Boyd Streets.
Project: Toy District Banners Central City East Association (CCEA) received a Community Beautification Grant from the City of Los Angeles Board of Public Works. The grant was used to design, fabricate and install several street banners in the area known as the Toy District.
This is a matching grant and will be matched by student and artist volunteer labor hours and/or in-kind sources such as vender discounts and materials donated by Central City East, Appleton Trophy, and design time from project manager, Qathryn Brehm.
The street banners will assist in identifying the Toy District by promoting civic pride and creating economic vitality in an inspired and colorful way.
Project Description:
The Toy District is a 13-block wholesale/retail area located in Downtown Los Angeles. Over 1200 merchants sell merchandise ranging from silk flowers, to electronics to party supplies and yes, plenty of toys including dolls, stuffed animals, skate boards, action figures and game.
When we think of toys it is easy to think of children and the meaning of toys in their world. Downtown Los Angeles is home to many children, many of whom are impoverished, some even homeless. Several organizations in the Downtown area work with students and art is one of their favorite programs.
Why New Banners?
A maximum banner life is about 3-5 years. The current District banners installed in 1998, over 7 years ago, are faded and tattered and do not create a good impression for shoppers, visitors and merchants.
The Banner Design:
The project invited area student’s to create paintings/drawings of popular toys, such as a bicycle, teddy bear, doll and train and other merchandise available in the District. A community panel wasl then selected as several of the drawings /paintings will be used in the final layout for the banner design. The banners will be fabricated and installed in the Toy District. To be most effective, the banners are colorful and uncomplicated in design and are a composite of various students’ paintings and drawings. The final banner design is digitally printed on both sides of a vinyl banner measuring 35” wide and 96” high.
Past Projects:
A successful 2004-2005 Community Beautification Grant included 38 banners utilizing student art, installed on 10-blocks of Downtown Los Angeles’ Seventh Street in the Industrial District. The students completed paintings/drawings of fruits, vegetables, seafood images from the Industrial District. Each student was awarded for their participation in the project.
