Central City East Association (CCEA) is in the process of installing 10 cameras that will be connected to Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Central Station.
Surveillance cameras have proven to be a major success in working with law enforcement - not only to deter criminal activity, but also to assist in the apprehension and successful prosecution of criminals. In 2003, MacArthur Park, one of the first public areas to have surveillance cameras installed, noticed an almost overnight decrease in criminal activity. The park became a model showcase for a once drug-infested area to again become a recreation area where families felt safe.

The cameras are state-of-the art with an enclosed wireless video communications system that works day and night. The entire project, including cameras, wireless equipment, installation, service and maintenance, will cost $175,000. The camera project is a partnership between the Central City East Association and LAPD.

Once connected to LAPD Central Division, officers will monitor the cameras from within a camera control room using a joy stick and key pad to zoom in and capture details of crimes in progress. From the control room, a call is placed to an officer in the field who will make contact with the suspect. The camera feed can be recorded to be used as evidence in criminal court.

Most of the cameras have been installed and CCEA is working to connect them to LAPD. Even though they are not yet operational, they have already proven their effectiveness. Encampments, drug dealing, and drug use have diminished in the areas where the cameras are being installed.
